Banks

TSB Bank

11 Clerk St, Edinburgh EH8 9JH, UK – 0131 517 9983

Service is quite good. Staff are patient

I banked here in the 1970s; the manager was a criminal maniac who ought to have been in jail. Perhaps he is. I haven't seem him for some time.

TSB Bank

16b, Cameron Toll Shopping Centre Lady Road, Edinburgh EH16 5PB, UK – 0131 517 9988

Brilliant place.

Bank of Scotland

15a, Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, 6 Lady Rd, Edinburgh EH16 5PB, UK – 0131 456 0800

Pleasant enough staff but always big queues. Always push you to use machines rather than humans, moving towards a robot society. TSB is right opposite, a far better option when it comes to banking.

amazing bank

Local Chambers of Commerce for EH16 4DS. These can be an extraordinarily effective way of getting into the business community and / or getting things done. Equally they can be entirely useless depending on the chair. If they have networking events associated with them definitely go, and keep going, if you have a business that need local support. What you put in is exactly what you get out. Below is the national site. Watch this slot - it might improve!
Edinburgh Trusted Trader

101 Niddrie Mains Rd, Edinburgh EH16 4DS, UK – 0333 444 0195

The Edinburgh Trusted Trader scheme is backed by the trading standards and has Police Scotland behind them to vet potential companies wishing to join the scheme. I can personally recommend them for their professionalism, efficiency and efforts their team put into their work and will go the extra mile to satisfy.

The Trusted Trader Scheme allows business owners the opportunity to show their open door policy, at the same time as allowing consumers the confidence that someone in authority is acting on their behalf to check properly on traders they are seeking to us. Well worth joining.

Old Dalkeith Road Community Recycling Centre

Old Dalkeith Road, Craigmillar, Edinburgh EH16 4TB, UK – 0131 529 3030

Easy place to take rubbish, well organised and helpful staff on hand. Love how they've decorated their hut and made a sitting area. Look out for the spooky skulls!!

Congratulations to the staff who have taken the time to make a little garden area around their cabin. I dropped some rubbish off yesterday and it brightened a dull edinburgh evening to see the colourful display. Well done. Staff were pleasant and helpful as usual.

Dental Surgeries

Bite Dentistry

30 Glen St, Edinburgh EH3 9JE, UK – 0131 228 3060

Yesterday I had a sinus lift and today I was at work having had no pain, no swelling or bruising. I really don't feel like I have had anything done at all!. I cannot thank Eimear enough for her professionalism, cheerfulness  and for making me feel so relaxed .  Thank you to the girls who assist her and at the reception too. The care before, during and after my treatment was excellent as always.

I have been with Bite Dentistry ever since they were still called 'Frederick Street' (2013) and before that "The Dental Clinic" (2007). They are private practice but do some NHS clients as well. Cathy, my original dentist is very professional and since retired. Helen Young is now my orthodontist. Twice a year I go for a checkup and twice for a hygenist. This permanent location is very nicely decorated and the waiting room is spacious and comfortable. Magazine and complimentary water. The machinery they use in the consult room / surgeries are top of the line. They take card when you need to pay, but you can also sign up for a 'program' of sessions (like a Dental Club Plan) - which gives you a discount when visiting and on treatments. I recommend them!

J.L.R. O'Donnell

1 Liberton Brae, Edinburgh EH16 6AQ, UK – 0131 664 4768

This is a very friendly practice, Richard will make feel comfortable and keep you well informed of any work needed. I think it is important not to miss regular check ups as this saves more work later. The clinic is modern and provide the very latest dental treatments. I will be getting the latest white fillings soon.

Vitality Dental Care

The Dome Store, 5/3 Bristo Square, Edinburgh EH8 9AL, UK – 0131 629 1120

Good service, as a student it is very convenient. If you are clear of your financial needs and situation they are very understanding. The dentist I always go to is Alexandra.

Friendly staff and a calm and easy experience every time. The reminders they send about appointments are so useful, and they're great about needing to change appointments. I've only ever seen Dr Omar, and he's also great- puts you at ease and explains things very clearly. His assistant is always nice to me as well. I'm sure this will remain my dental practice throughout my studies.

Milton Surgery

132 Mountcastle Dr S, Edinburgh EH15 3LL, UK – 0131 549 7300

Very good staff from reception to doctors .I think the need to up date the technology is required by offering online booking of appointments for those that can would assist with the smooth running of this practise

Practice itself is very good, and the GPS are really excellent, seem to take a real interest in their patients. It is true to say that sometimes getting through to the staff via phone can be a challenge at times

The University Health Centre, The University of Edinburgh

6 Bristo Pl, Edinburgh EH8 9AL, UK – 0131 650 2777

I think this is the best practice I have ever been registered with...always helpful and know their stuff, I trust what the gps say ! If you're lucky enough to be in their catchment area don't hesitate!

Liberton Medical Group

65 Liberton Gardens, Edinburgh EH16 6JT, UK – 0131 664 3050

Having only moved to Edinburgh recently we had to go through the process of being allocated a GP surgery. Although I'm incredibly lucky not to suffer from Ill health I've only had to use the surgery a couple of times and I can't fault the staff and nurses. I know it can be quite difficult to get a last minute appointment, but if you live nearby they will accept walk-ins from 8am and will try and allocate an appointment for that day - believe first appointments are from 08.40am.

Busy surgery but have always offered same day appointments. Also happy to phone me for review. Great online prescription order service.

NHS Direct is now NHS 24. Just dial 111 to speak to a professional or click the link below for there self help website. Lots of really useful info but keep clear of heart surgery! If in doubt ask your GP or call 111. Good luck.

Royal Infirmary

Excellent attention given to my sister after she fell down a flight of stairs in a shop whilst we were on holiday. Thanks to doctors and staff. However it would help to have an email address as we need to take matters up with our insurers when we return to south Africa as we would like to get details from the very kind paramedics who collected her and took her to ERI

Excellent. the facilities are clean and the staff always find the time to give the patients the care they need

Edinburgh Sick Children's Hospital

9 Sciennes Rd, Edinburgh EH9 1LF, UK – 0131 536 0000

The most fabulous staff. My daughter was a day patient and adored her nurse carol that much she wanted to stay in longer to lap up the attention she gave her!

The staff in here are absolutely amazing with my 2 kids in a time of need and reassurance for me.

Give and get free stuff. Here you will find lots of items that people are willing to give away, for FREE! This is instead of taking them to a local landfill site. The aim of this site is to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill (20.9 million tonnes of it last year in the UK) and recycling is great news for the environment.
We all know that we need to recycle more - and this is a great way of doing it.

Local Restaurants & Places to Eat around Edinburgh

Merchants Restaurant

17 Merchant St, Edinburgh EH1 2QD, UK – 0131 225 4009

Excellent service and fantastic food! A real find - the haggis and homemade fishcakes starters are highly recommended, as well as their sirloin steak. If you book a slot before 7pm, there's a £15 deal for 2 courses - the food is worth it at full price, so I honestly don't know a better deal in Edinburgh! Really, really happy with my meal.

Ate here as part of a buyagift Edinburgh castle and meal deal food was very good, large portions and good service

Ichiban Japanese Asian Restaurant

34 W Preston St, Edinburgh EH8 9PY, UK – 0131 662 1133

Ordered two ramen bowls (braised beef, and seafood special) and a bit of inari sushi for takeaway. Takeaway was prompt, and the food was tasty. The sushi was well presented in a pretty little plastic sushi box, complete with ginger, wasabi and Kikkoman soy sauce. The ramen looked quite plain in its plastic takeaway container, plus separate styrofoam container for soup, but when combined in a bowl looked and tasted great, with the seafood ramen coming with plenty of prawns, squid and mussels, and the braised beef being tender and delicious. The noodles were a bit thicker and more solid than the thin wavy noodles you sometimes get in ramen, which I liked. The price is a little high for a bowl of ramen, which is my only reservation, but when you're craving Japanese food and you don't want to go out, it's a great option to have. The only warning is that (as noted in another review) the prices on the website are very out of date and don't reflect the current prices. We ordered via Just Eat so got the current prices.

Absolute

22 Valleyfield St, Edinburgh EH3 9LR, UK – 0131 228 8022

Excellent Thai food. Bring your own wine (glasses provided), corkage £2.50 per bottle. Tom yum soup very nice, recommend chicken and spring onions from the wok. Pad Thai nice but could be a bit more spicy. Service very friendly in this family run business.

Excellent small and cosy Thai restaurant. Wonderful food well prepared and presented. One of the best Thai restaurant's that I have had the pleasure of eating at. Highly recommended

Little Monkeys

28 Kilmaurs Road, (off Dalkeith Road), Edinburgh EH16 5DP, UK – 0131 667 5544

I Have had my son at this nursery from the baby room now to the toddler room. He absolutely loves it and has come on leaps and bounds. The staff are lovely, especially Katrina in the baby room and Kirstin the manager. I now have another little girl and although this nursery is out of the way of my home since I'm no longer at work in town, I will definitely be putting my daughter here too. A lovely place for childcare and have been really flexible with me.

My husband and I have been delighted with Little Monkeys at Kilmaurs. Right from Day 1 we have been impressed with the enthusiasm and kindness shown by everyone. Our 2 children (aged 5 and now P1, and 2) have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the activities on offer are always varied and stimulating. When we go on holiday our kids miss the staff! Real bonuses for us have been flexibility in hours, twice daily home cooked food on site, and a soft play room for burning off energy on rainy days. I cannot recommend this nursery highly enough!
